Conference Session: Going Cinematic: How one documentary, Maji, put film in focus at Colby

Maji, a Colby College Magazine film production, is a beautiful piece of storytelling. It has been enthusiastically received by the Colby community, by the residents of the small Kenyan village where it takes place, and by the foundation that funded this remarkable undertaking by a Colby student. Benard Kibet sought to bring running water to his community. Colby Magazine wanted to document the project and, rather than send a writer and photographer, dispatched Milton Guillen, a newly hired staff video journalist. For less than $7,000, Guillen and an associate produced Maji, a film that has conveyed this story in a remarkable and compelling way. It is the first of what will be many film productions by what had been a print and online publication. Meet Guillen and Colby Magazine Managing Editor Gerry Boyle to learn more about the project and the process.
