Conference Session: New Traditions – How Amherst College Changed its Mascot

In January 2016 the Amherst College Board of Trustees announced that the College would no longer use its long-standing unofficial mascot Lord Jeffery Amherst. The College’s Alumni Executive Committee was tapped with the task of creating and executing a process to choose a new one. The office of Alumni and Parent Programs embarked on the 16-month project of working with this committee to deliver an inclusive, transparent mascot-selection process that engaged more than 12,500 alumni, students, faculty and staff. Presenters will talk share details of the process, the challenges and opportunities it created, as well as lessons learned.
